Are you a job seeker tired of receiving automatic notifications? Like this: “After careful review of your application and qualifications, we have chosen to pursue other candidates at this time. We will continue to keep your profile active in our database for future consideration and welcome you to apply to other positions you are qualified for.”
After sending hundreds of emails, applying constantly on job boards and corporate websites you probably feel exhausted and discouraged. And at this point if you are not receiving any phone calls maybe is time to revamp your Resume and consult with the professionals. Finding a job is a job itself.

The Association of Romanian Engineers in Canada, based in Toronto, hosted a seminar that opened my eyes on how the hiring process is changing with the new technologies and social media platforms. The seminar was held to present Pamela Paterson's book: "Get the Job: Optimize your Resume for the Online Job Search". Pamela's book reached #2 position on Amazon (out of 13,000 resume books, January 2014).
What sets this Resume book apart from all the others is Pamela's IT experience. She has seen the inside of these online job systems and knows how they work.
The following is a sneak peek of Paterson’s book. I hope this information serves as a ray of light to help you get to the “gate keepers” of your dream job.
Human Resources professionals keep looking for the same things: Experienced candidates, years of experience, technical & computer skills, people that share the same values and culture from the organization, etc. They also look for gaps and lack of experience in the Resume.
Nowadays the difference is the use of more technological tools. An example is the “back door check”, HR professionals now search more information about the candidates on Google, on their Linkedin Profiles and even on their personal social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) Promote your personal brand while creating an “online presence”.
Linkedin has become a major source of information for HR professionals; your Linkedin profile must be updated. Is OK to actively look for new connections and don’t forget to participate in online discussions and ask for recommendations.
- Recruiters also use softwares called ATS –Applicant tracking systems-, which are linked to the corporate websites and job boards.
- Study, study and study. Information is the real advantage: learn about the company, the industry, the competitors, their products and/or services, their values and culture, social responsibility activities, who could be your boss?, which of the employees are on Linkedin?
- Boost your content while creating an appealing layout and design for your Resume. The first impression matters!
- Show the important information on the top.
- Tailor your content for the online job systems. Use the same words of the job description, since the ATS software will search and will filter by key words and exact phrases. For example, do not use “Microsoft Office Word”, if the job post mentions “Microsoft Word” only.
- Avoid using the same Resume for all the positions you apply. Use a different Resume for each job and the exact key words of the job post.
- Show the company your interest. Some ATS are activated to privilege those candidates applying directly through the corporate website, not only through job boards.
- Filter questions are there for a reason. The ATS will automatically discard those candidates who answer these types of questions incorrectly, example: Are you legally entitled to work in Canada?
Pamela is a dedicated speaker, consultant and inspirational mentor. She has helped job seekers get jobs over 15 years. According to her Linkedin Profile: “Pamela gained a unique perspective into how online job systems work. She saw that highly qualified job candidates routinely failed to advance through online job systems due to a lack of understanding of online systems’ screening criteria.
Realizing that job application success now required a new, scientific approach to resume writing, she set about outlining such an approach and presenting it at colleges, workshops and conferences. Using this scientific approach to the hiring process, Pamela achieves a 90% success rate in helping people find jobs.”
