Rest in peace, rest green

If you are concerned about protecting the environment and leave a better planet for your loved ones, you might want to start thinking about your funeral. Indeed, although this is not a common topic of conversation is important.
A traditional coffin made of wood or metal, besides being expensive, contains various polluting elements (varnishes, metal parts and other synthetic elements) that cannot be degradable. Cremation is also a polluting process, since it involves the emission of toxic gases.
Companies now are offering a wide range of ecological, innovative and cheaper biodegradable coffins and urns to help reduce the soil contamination, the carbon footprint and toxic gases produced during the incineration.

Environmentalist till the grave

Ecoffins, a UK based company offers a variety of eco-friendly coffins, 100% natural and biodegradable. Their materials include: bamboo, banana, cardboard, willow, fabric-covered, pnadanus and pine. Lightweight constructed, coffins are guaranteed to carry a weight of up to 150 kilograms.

The company RestGreen of Spain, has created coffins foldable and bio-degradable made of recycled cardboard. RestGreen ensures that only uses water-based paint and adhesives from plants. In addition, the coffins contain no bolts, screws or fasteners to prevent soil contamination.
"After a period of a year and a half to two years of burial, (depending on the soil composition), RestGreen be completely absorbed by the earth."

Reefs of peace

The Mexican company InMemoriam created the "sea shells" biodegradable urns that float for a few minutes and then sink gradually to degrade. Each urn is made from recycled paper and is manufactured and hand decorated.
The "Eternal Heart" is a pendant made of silver and specially designed to hold a small portion of ashes of your loved one.

The "Reef of Life" service involves integrating the ashes with a concrete semi spherical structure. After a few months, the structure becomes a reef full of marine life. Each “Reef of life” has a metal plate with the identification details of the beloved. The reefs are located in Ensenada Rodrigo, Acapulco, Guerrero.

Eco-fashionista forever

In the case that you opt for a wooden coffin, Creative Coffins offers customized coffins made of boards from recycled forest sources and wrapped in paper with different designs. Cardboard picture coffins are made from carton board materials produced from unbleached pulp containing a minimum of 80% recycled paper plus wood pulp sourced from sustainable forests.

Capsula Mundi – Seeds of life
Capsula Mundi is the first Italian project created to promote the realization of green cemeteries. Capsula Mundi is a container with the shape of an egg, made with modern material -starch plastic- in which the dead body is put in a fetal position. Capsula Mundi is planted like a seed in the soil, and on a tree is planted on top of it.
The containers are produced with 100% biodegradable material, starch plastic. The starch is taken from seasonal plants such as potatoes and corn.
Since the Italian legislation, doesn’t allow this type of burial. The Association Capsula Mundi was created to promote the creation of memory parks and ask the Italian legislators to change the laws.
