For those of you looking to make a life of your
blogs, this is a post to encourage you. Every year thousands of blogs are
created, most of them will stay at the blogosphere without recognition; others
like Mashable, TechCrush, Engadget, The Santorialist, TMZ or Perez Hilton have
become renowned brands. Now their owners are millionaires and more, they are
considered as leaders of opinion and some of them are giving speeches all over
the world or have created alternative businesses as consultants.
Great example is Ariana Huffington, a
journalist that created The Huffington Post blog, which in 2011 was bought by
AOL for US$315 million. The Santorialist a fashion blog developed by Scott Schuman attracts more than
70,000 readers a day and has been named one of Time's Top 100 Design Influences.1
Here are some pieces of advice to improve your blog;
some of them were extracted from different websites, some of them from my personal
contribution:
- Turning your passion into a serious business
starts with the creation of a brand, the establishment of a vision in a short,
mid and long-term, a mission and specific objectives. Write everything and set
realistic goals.
- A blog requires passion, commitment and
tons of work, are you ready to work hard?
- Find a niche. Identify your audience and
connect with them, listen to their unfulfilled needs.
- Write good, interesting and useful content.
- Customize your blog and invest on it. A free
theme is OK if you're starting but with the time it will need a more
professional look.
- Define
your monetizing strategy. (Take a look
at the advices from the experts, see Sources)
- Creating content for your blog is not enough;
it has to lean in other social media platforms.
Research about the most
frequented by your customers and engage with them. Comment on their posts,
Retweet, Favorite their messages or images. In the Web 2.0 era communication in
one direction does not do the trick.
